Coming of Age: American Art, 1850s to 1950s
Through October 12, 2008

A century that witnessed the transformation of American art is depicted through a selection of more than 70 works of art from the Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts. These paintings and sculptures recount the passage of American art from figurative representations of landscape or still life to the abstract interpretation of universal ideals, to America’s affirmation on the international art scene and to the adoption of a new pictorial language and a new "American" art.

Edward Hopper, Manhattan Bridge Loop, 1928. Oil on canvas, 35 x 60 in. Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts; gift of Stephen C. Clark, Esq. (1932.17)
